I decided to choose this type of subject for a blog because of the one side people may see or be exposed to when it comes to police officers. Police officers are also humans who work 8-12 hour days just trying to help people and make the world a better place. Most media outlets and statistics show the downside to the policing world instead of showing how police officers have a positive role within the communities. For example, student resource officers have been a pinnacle turning point when it comes to our community schools and the issues that these students may have with problems that aren't supposed to be in school settings. Students have a special trust within student resource officers that no other adult may have. They are the one positive law enforcement figure that students have when it comes to school and life problems. I had a student resource officer that was also my football coach, and is now my boss. There was one time the I knew someone had illegal drugs within the school and I didn't want to be the one to tell on anybody because I was a different person back then and did not want to stir up any trouble. I knew that he was the one person that I could confront and confidently tell about my situation and get some honest and positive feedback along with a solution. He knew how to talk to students and make them feel safe and as if they weren't being interrogated. This is the side of law enforcement that most people do not see and it does not give them a different mindset.

I think this is a perspective that is needed, especially with everything that's going on today. For most civilians, police officers are often inaccessible and that can leave a feeling of disconnection that can lead to misunderstanding. I think a lot of people do understand that officers are human too, but it's sometimes hard to keep that in mind when wading through all the (mis)information that fills our Facebook pages, Twitter feeds, etc.
